Invisalign is the preferred orthodontic system because it’s virtually invisible. No brackets or wires are needed to move your teeth. Instead, clear aligners are worn over them, applying gentle pressure to move them gradually. You’ll enjoy fewer restrictions using a comfortable and discreet solution. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of what you can expect while on your journey to a straight smile.
Consultation
Invisalign is effective in correcting many bite and alignment issues, but you’ll still need a consultation with an orthodontist. They’ll examine your mouth to ensure clear aligners can fix your misalignment problems. In addition, they’ll ensure your mouth is healthy. It’s not unusual to need a little prep work, like gum disease therapy or dental fillings.
Treatment Planning
Your orthodontist will use state-of-the-art technology to map the movement of your teeth using an impression of your mouth. The information is then fabricated into a series of aligners to move your teeth in small increments.
Getting Your Aligners
Once the dental lab has sent your aligners back to your orthodontist, you’ll be ready to pop them into your mouth. You must commit to wearing them for at least 22 hours per day. Your orthodontist will instruct you to change to the next set of aligners every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on your treatment plan.
Although every situation differs, most patients are finished with their treatment in about 12 months, but many things will affect your timeline, like the complexity of the tooth movements needed. On average, Invisalign moves your teeth 50% faster than metal braces.
Follow-Up Appointments
You won’t need appointments for adjustments because there aren’t any brackets or wires. However, you’ll still need to check in with your orthodontist every few weeks. They’ll monitor the movement of your teeth to ensure there aren’t any unpredicted complications. If your teeth don’t move as expected, they may recommend refinement aligners to make minor adjustments after already beginning your treatment.
Getting Your Retainers
Once you finish your aligners, you’ll need retainers to preserve your results. The retainers will be just as discreet as Invisalign. They will hold your teeth in their new positions to allow your bone and tissues to heal around them to ensure they don’t migrate back to their previous positions.
Your orthodontist will explain everything during your consultation. They will give you the information you need to feel confident about the road ahead.
